There are a million different reasons that you may want to lose body fat ranging from simply wanting to be able to zip up your jeans again to needing to get your body fat percentage down for a fitness competition. Regardless of your current fitness level losing body fat is possible and you can become healthier, more confident and feel & look terrific.
Many people make the mistake of confusing losing weight with losing body fat. Just because you lose weight it doesn't necessarily mean that you are losing body fat because you could also be losing water weight and muscle as well. In fact, it is totally possible - and often times even likely - to lose body fat without losing weight. A lot of times people will start a diet or exercise program and get frustrated because they don't see the scale budging. However, in many cases they are actually losing body fat while at the same time becoming fitter and gaining muscle, so even though the scale hasn't moved they are leaner and slimmer than when they started.
Because you can't always trust the scale when you are trying to lose body fat, it is important to take measurements so you can accurately track your progress and so you don't get discouraged. Take measurements of your hips, thighs, stomach, arms and chest and write them down. As you progress along with your diet and exercise program you may be surprised to see that although the numbers on the scale haven't moved you have actually lost inches off your body.
When you are losing body fat it is also very helpful to use some sort of tool to measure your actual body fat percentage. You can use body fat calipers which pinch a small bit of skin and give you an indication of how much body fat you have, although these sometimes can be a little tricky to use on yourself. Another option is to buy a scale that measures body fat by sending an electrical impulse through your feet to measure you body fat percentage. These scales are only slightly more expensive than a traditional scale and are not 100% accurate, but they can help you gauge how well your efforts toward losing body fat are going.
If you really want to get motivated to lose body fat, try taking some photos of yourself in a skimpy outfit that you can use as your "before" photos. These can be a great motivation to work harder at losing body fat and can also help you to see how far you have come. A lot of times even if you can't see a change when you look in the mirror you can see a huge change when you look at your "before" photos which should help you to stay enthusiastic about what you are doing.
Losing body fat requires a different type of diet and exercise program that you may be used to. Many of the traditional diet and exercise programs can help you to lose weight but don't focus specifically on losing body fat.
